To tell you the truth i had something else in my mind about the final Surf In June post, but a previous comment by Dr.Bitternight made me listen again to the awesome Croatian instro surf combo known as...The Bambi Molesters!
And more specifically, their 2010 album(and their best, in my opinion) As The Dark Wave Swells.
The only 'problem' is that the band is quite known and easy to find(even the pseudo-elitist hipster webzine Shitfork has reviewed them in the past)and i'd like to write about something, let's say, more obscure..but it doesn't matter.As The Dark Wave Swells is the instro surf album that i'm currently listening to the most and an absolute masterpiece of the genre so, to hell with the schedule.
An ideal epilogue to our surf tribute.Off we go!
Joseph Siffert (July 7, 1936 – October 24, 1971) was a Swiss racing driver.
Affectionately known as "Seppi" to his family and close friends, Siffert was born in Fribourg ,Switzerland, the son of a dairy owner. He initially made his name in racing on two wheels, powering his way to the Swiss 350 cc motorcycle championship in 1959, before switching to four wheels with a Formula Junior Stanguellini. Siffert graduated to Formula One as a privateer in 1962, with a four-cylinder Lotus Climax. He later moved to Swiss team ScuderiaFilipinetti, and in 1964 joined Rob Walker's private British Rob Walker Racing Team. Early successes included victories in the non-Championship 1964 and 1965 MediterraneanGrands Prix, both times beating Jim Clark by a very narrow margin. Siffert was married twice and to his second wife Simone during the height of his career in the late 1960s and at the time of his death in 1971. They had two children together, Véronique and Philippe.

Stereophonic Space Sound Unlimited is a Swiss band which combines elements from surf rock, lounge, exotica, electronica and 60's/70's movie themes.Not pure surf of course, but honestly they are amazing!
In 2005, Stereophonic Space Sound Unlimited wrote the ost (sample here)for a documentary about the life of Jo Siffert, which is nothing less than spectacular.Nuff' said.
Έχει μπει λίγο ντεφορμέ το καλοκαίρι(συννεφιά, αεράκι κλπ)τουλάχιστον στην Αθήνα αλλά κανένα πρόβλημα, έτσι κι αλλιώς ο καύσωνας είναι αναπόφευκτος οπότε όσο αργότερα τόσο καλύτερα.
Το Precession Of The Equinoxes πάραυτα θα μείνει πιστό στο πλάνο του να μπολιάσει τις αναρτήσεις του Ιουνίου με δυνητικά καλοκαιρινές(και συγκεκριμένα ΄παραλιακές΄) μουσικές, οπότε βουρ στον πατσά.
Τα κουνούπια ως γνωστόν είναι αρκούντως σπαζαρχίδικα(προσωπικά αναφέρομαι μόνο στο βουητό, γενικά δε με τσιμπάνε) και συν τοις άλλοις μεταδίδουν και ασθένειες όπως ελονοσία κλπ.Τι γίνεται όμως με τα Ατομικά Κουνούπια;
Τα Ατομικά Κουνούπια σύμφωνα με πηγές ήταν 4 φυσιολογικά κουνούπια μέχρι που βρέθηκαν στο Three Mile Island όπου γεύτηκαν μολυσμένο από ραδιενέργεια αίμα, το οποίο οδήγησε στην μετάλλαξη τους και στην επιθυμία τους να παίξουν surf rock(επίσης όπως φαίνεται στη φωτογραφία παρακάτω, έγιναν κομματάκι ανθρωπόμορφα).
Στο πρώτο ομώνυμο album αυτών των Αμερικανών surf rockers που κυκλοφόρησε το 2002 θα ακούσετε ΚΑΤΑΠΛΗΚΤΙΚΟ instro surf τίγκα στο reverb με εμπνευσμένες καθαρές μελωδίες και sci-fi θεματικά/ηχητικά τσονταρίσματα(η επιλεκτική χρήση του theremin εδώ κι εκεί, όπως και κάποιοι τίτλοι τραγουδιών).
Αν είστε στη φάση απλά απαγορεύεται να το προσπεράσετε.Check It Out!
Όταν είδα το Pulf Fiction για πρώτη φορά στα 16-17 μου αυτό που μου έκανε εντύπωση στην ταινία περισσότερο από όλα ήταν η ηχητική επένδυση της.Ο πηγούνιας άλλωστε στη συνέχεια θα έδειχνε με τον πλέον πειστικό τρόπο ότι ξέρει να κάνει compilations καθώς μέχρι σήμερα είτε οι ταινίες του ήταν καλές(Kill Bill,Django Unchained) είτε όχι τόσο καλές(Death Proof,Inglorious Basterds), η ηχητική επένδυση γαμούσε ανέκαθεν.
Στο-κλασικό πλέον-Pulp Fiction λοιπόν, την προσοχή μου τράβηξαν εξαρχής τα εξής κομμάτια:
το Bustin Surfboards των The Tornadoes,
το φοβερό και τρομερό Surf Rider των The Lively Ones,
καθώς και η έκδοση της Μισιρλού από τον Dick Dale(δεν παίζει να βάλω link, ήδη νιώθω Captain Obvious που κάνω πρόλογο με το Pulp Fiction, μην το καραξεσκίσουμε κιόλας ε?).
Ήταν μουσική sexy,αλανιάρικη και ζωντανή, την οποία ένιωθα ότι γνώριζα(προφανώς είχα ξανακούσει σε άσχετες φάσεις μικρότερος)αλλά στην οποία δεν είχα εντρυφήσει.Και ήθελα να εντρυφήσω.
Η παραπάνω ιστορία μόνο πρωτότυπη δεν είναι, καθώς το Pulp Fiction αποτέλεσε το μπαρούτι(και η μετέπειτα επιτυχία των Αμερικανών surf rockers Man Or Astroman? το φυτίλι) με το οποίο έγινε η έκρηξη της αναβίωσης του instro surf, της exotica, του lounge κοκ στα 90's.Κοινώς, η επιθυμία που γεννήθηκε στον έφηβο Koga Ryu Phoenix-και πραγματοποιήθηκε με το που έβαλα γρήγορη σύνδεση στο σπίτι κάποια χρόνια μετά-γεννήθηκε με παρόμοιο τρόπο σε χιλιάδες άλλους ανθρώπους ανά τον κόσμο.
Μιας και καλοκαιριάζει λοιπόν, το Precession Of The Equinoxes θα φορέσει τα καλοκαιρινά του για τον μήνα Ιούνη και θα ανεβάσει παρεμφερείς(αλλά όχι αυστηρά surf rock),προσωπικά αγαπημένες μουσικές που βγήκαν από το 1995 και μετά-συνεπώς δε θα αναρτηθούν εδώ ΄sos΄ καλλιτέχνες του παρελθόντος όπως Ventures ή Dick Dale-έτσι για να φτιάξουμε κλίμα για τη συνέχεια.Ready ,set, go!
Ο The Volcanos είναι μια αγνή instro surf μπάντα από το Royal Oak του Michigan, το δε album τους Krakatoa Surfquake που κυκλοφόρησε το 1996 είναι ένα από τα καλύτερα-πιθανότατα το καλύτερο-instro surf album που έχω ακούσει στην post-pulp fiction εποχή του είδους.Ακούστε εδώ την κομματάρα(και με φοβερό τίτλο btw) Beatnik Bandit, κατεβάστε το album, κάντε καμιά τσαλαβούτα αν μπορείτε και τα λέμε οσονούπω.
Second non thematic post in a row but hey, that's life.Let's get to the point:
J.A.Seazer(or Caesar) is a japanese film and theater music composer(he has also written the music for this sickness which i highly recommend for you to watch, but that's not the case here).
In 1973 Seazer released Kokkyou Junreika,a psychedelic rock masterpiece which gained cult status through the years.
To make a long story short,do yourself a favor and listen to this.By far my favorite japanese rock album(it's slowly becoming one of my favorite albums in general, actually),it beats every Boris album down easily.
Not in the mood for a thematic post today so i'm gonna do it plain and simple, in the music blogger's old school way.
Revelry is the second album of Norwegian doom rockers-well,at least that time-Beyond Dawn and it was released on 1998 by (long gone)Misanthropy Records of our dear and lovely Tiziana Stupia.
You will immediately notice that there's a strong resemblance in sound between Revelry and Swan's The Great Annihilator, though Revelry is much more, let's say, bad-mooded.
I consider Revelry to be a gloomy masterpiece, the ideal album to listen if you suffer from the loss of a(bad, yet necessary)relationship, a hangover(caused by your effort to forget by drinking) or if you are just fucking sick of EVERYTHING.Give it a shot.Cd rip.
In ancient Greek mythology, Nereus was an aquatic deity of low importance(unlike Poseidon, the Olympian sea god).
He and his wife Doris,the daughter of Oceanus(all three seen above, in a picture taken at the reconstructed Pergamon Altar in Berlin) had 50 daughters known as the Nereids.
Nereids were seadwelling nymphs(note:nymphs in ancient greek mythology were mythical female spirits of the wilderness,representing the beauty and fertility of nature) often imagined as fish-tailed.The best known of them was Amphitrite,who became the wife of Poseidon,and Thetis who became the mother of Achilles, the great Trojan War hero.
The song about the Nereids above is a track taken from the third album of the greek band Daemonia Nymphe,a neofolk band who is known-mostly outside of Greece,though-for singing their songs in ancient greek(to be more specific,most of their lyrics are Orphic Hymns) and for using replicas of ancient greek music instruments.
Their homonymous third album(released in 2002) is the first to feature these replicas,enriching their sound and taking it to a whole new level.
Although i feel that the album that followed Daemonia Nymphe(Krataia Asterope,released in 2007) is a little bit better,i would strongly recommend this one as an introduction to this special band, one of the most substantial neofolk bands of our days.Album ripped from my personal collection(as most of the blog's stuff actually),enjoy.
